About Your Water

The City of Mt. Vernon provides reliable water and sewer service to residents and businesses, working with the Rend Lake Conservancy District for our water supply and delivering clean, safe drinking water to our community. Mt. Vernon also serves as a regional provider, supplying water to nearby towns including Belle Rive, Bluford, North East Water District, Waltonville, and Woodlawn.

Our teams maintain critical infrastructure to ensure safe drinking water, effective wastewater treatment, and responsive customer service.

Who We Are

Three divisions work together to provide water and sewer service:

Administrative/Billing Services (Finance Department)

This group is part of the Finance Department. They take care of:

  • Handles service start/stop requests

  • Manages billing and payments for water, sewer, garbage, and recycling

  • Answers customer service questions

Water Division (Public Works Department)

This Water Division, part of the Public Works Department, manages:

  • Maintains 185+ miles of water mains

  • Operates 2 elevated towers (500,000 gallons each) and 1 ground storage tank (1.5 million gallons)

  • Installs, repairs, and reads 7,000 water meters and maintains 1,300 fire hydrants

  • Provides 24/7 emergency repairs to pipes, valves, and hydrants

Sewer Division (Public Works Department)

  • Maintains 126 miles of gravity sewer lines and 10 miles of force mains

  • Oversees 2,500 manholes and 16 lift stations

  • Cleans, inspects, and unclogs sewer pipes using specialized equipment

  • Provides repairs and replacements for sewer lines and manholes
