Sign Permits

The City of Mt. Vernon has rules in place to help make sure signs in our community are safe, look good, and follow city guidelines. These rules apply to all signs within the city’s zoning area.

Do You Need a Permit?

You may need a permit to install a sign. Our staff will review your proposal before you install the sign.

How to Apply:

  • Complete and submit your application online
  • Or download your application and bring it to the Engineering and Inspections Office at City Hall

If you have questions about when a permit is needed, contact the Building Inspector for help.

For full details, you can read the City of Mt. Vernon Sign Ordinance.

  • Signs put up by government offices for directions or information

  • Small signs (up to 1 square foot) for directing traffic or parking on private property, as long as they do not advertise a business

  • Stickers or logos on doors or windows showing memberships or accepted credit cards (as long as they don’t advertise products or services)

  • Handicapped Parking or Towing Notice signs as allowed by state law

  • Private Drive signs (one per driveway, no larger than 1 square foot)

  • Public Signs from government agencies or utilities, like traffic signs, safety signs, or facility signs

  • Security and Warning Signs, such as “No Trespassing” or “No Soliciting” signs

    • Residential properties: One sign per street, no larger than 1 square foot

    • Non-residential properties: One sign per street, no larger than 3 square feet
