Fire and Police Commission

The Fire and Police Commission is granted the duties and authority to make rules concerning the appointment, removal, and discharge of officers and members of the Fire and Police Departments of the City. They are also responsible for maintaining an eligibility register of people eligible for appointment to each department.

Overview

The Fire and Police Commission was established by Chapter 35 of the Mt. Vernon Revised Code of Ordinances in accordance with and pursuant to Division 2.1 of Article 10 of the Illinois Municipal Code. The commission consists of five members, appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. Each Commissioner serves a three-year term.
