Mayor & Council

The City of Mt. Vernon operates under a council–manager form of government. The City Council is made up of the Mayor and four Council Members, each serving staggered four-year terms. The Mayor is elected separately and serves as the ceremonial head of the City while leading Council meetings and representing Mt. Vernon at official functions.

The Mayor and Council Members work together to represent residents, plan for the future, and ensure Mt. Vernon continues to be a great place to live, work, and visit.

What the City Council Does

The City Council is the decision-making body for Mt. Vernon. Together, the Mayor and Council Members set goals, create policies, and make choices that shape the future of our community.

The Council focuses on things like:

  • Community growth and development
  • Street, water, and infrastructure improvements
  • Public safety and city services
  • Budget and financial planning
  • Parks, recreation, and quality of life projects

The Council hires a City Manager to oversee daily operations, manage staff, and make sure Council policies are carried out. The City Manager provides recommendations and updates to the Council, but final decisions are made by the elected members.

Council Responsibilities
