City of Mt. Vernon Launches Lead Service Line Replacement Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City of Mt. Vernon Launches Lead Service Line Replacement Program
Mt. Vernon, May 2, 2024 - The City of Mt. Vernon is proud to introduce its Lead Service Line Replacement Program, a comprehensive effort aimed at safeguarding the community from the potential health risks associated with lead in service lines. Under the leadership of Mayor John Lewis, this program marks a significant step towards a healthier and safer future for all residents.
In 2023, the City conducted a cross-connection and service line material survey, which provided invaluable insights into the types of materials used in the service lines across Mt. Vernon. The responses were meticulously compiled into a comprehensive Lead Service Inventory Report, which is now available for public viewing on the city’s official website at www.mtvernon.com/lead.
Mayor John Lewis expressed his gratitude for the residents’ active participation in the survey, stating, “The overwhelming response from our community demonstrates the commitment we share in ensuring the well-being of our families, friends, and neighbors. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to address this issue head-on.”
In compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, the City will soon be issuing an informational public notice to residents. This notice will provide more details about the Lead Service Line Replacement Program and the steps the City will be taking to replace the necessary lines. The project is set to commence in 2026 and is estimated to span over a period of 10 years.
Mayor Lewis emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Our primary goal is to protect the health and safety of our residents. By replacing the lead service lines, we are taking measures to ensure clean and safe drinking water for everyone in Mt. Vernon."
The City of Mt. Vernon encourages all residents to visit the official website at www.mtvernon.com/lead for more information on the Lead Service Line Replacement Program. The website serves as a comprehensive resource, providing essential details about the project, frequently asked questions, and contact information for any further inquiries.
