Summer Solicitation Advisory

As the summer months roll in, we often see an increase in door-to-door solicitation in our neighborhoods. We want to ensure that you feel informed and secure during this time. Here are a few tips to help you handle solicitors effectively:

Know Your Rights: In Mt. Vernon, solicitors are only allowed to engage with residents between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and are required to have a permit. Don’t hesitate to ask for identification and proof of their permit.

What to Look for on a Permit:

  • Permitted dates
  • Expiration date
  • Company name
  • Foil City seal and signatures

Trust Your Instincts and Report Suspicious Activity: Your safety is paramount. If a solicitor makes you feel uncomfortable, pressured, or harassed, politely decline and close the door. Contact the Mt. Vernon Police Department at 618-242-2727 (non-emergency) to report any suspicious behavior, misconduct, unpermitted solicitors, or solicitation after dusk. You can also submit a written complaint to the City Clerk's office.

Protect Your Information: Never share personal or financial information, such as account numbers or Social Security numbers, with solicitors.

Post a Sign: Consider putting up a “No Soliciting” sign near your front door to deter unwanted visitors. This could be a purchased or homemade sign.

Verify Before You Buy: Take your time to research any products or services offered. Don’t feel rushed into making a decision on the spot.

Please note, the city cannot deny a permit without valid cause and written complaints from residents.

Remember, it's always better to be safe and informed. Stay vigilant and enjoy a safe summer!
